B E L M O N D    M A R O M A was an easy choice because what’s not to love about Belmond Hotels? I was already a fan of this historic hotel before Belmond took it over, but this was my first visit since the transition. (So many hotels, so little time.) On arrival, I immediately noticed that the spirit of the property was not only still intact but enhanced even more by this partnership.

what to do //Something about the lush jungle vibes masks the energy of activity. Belmond Maroma is tranquil + peaceful, a true escape, and yet it offers so much to do.  One of the most intriguing curated activities offered is a morning of painting, inspired by Picasso’s former assistant, Bertrand Castelli. Once the artist in residence, it is easy to see how this lush tropical retreat sparked Bertrand’s creativity.

Two of my all-time favorite activities are complimentary at Belmond Maroma: yoga classes + 45 min bike tour through the resort’s expansive property. The hotel has three pools, the adults-only quiet pool is my personal favorite because of its location + aesthetic. 

Any body of water, be it natural or man-made, encapsulated by lush tropical landscaping wins with me every time. Belmond Maroma, In their own words::

eat // Where do I begin? The incredible service adds so much to the quality of every dining experience at Belmond Maroma. Most of the front-of-house food and beverage staff have been at the hotel for many years and they love to engage and answer your questions. After placing your order for a traditional Mexican breakfast, take a moment to have a conversation with your server, and get suggestions for how you should spend the rest of the day.

For lunch and dinner, I suggest Mexican seafood dishes. I’m very picky when it comes to fresh seafood. Living in Florida and traveling to the Caribbean often, I’ve had more than my fair share. When I tell you the assorted ceviche platter and the fish tacos were the best I have had, know that my points of reference are many. My pants were a bit snug on the flight home – but well worth every bite.

rooms // The rooms + suites at Belmond Maroma are styled after traditional Mexican haciendas, dark wood and wrought iron furnishings, crisp white walls, flowing curtains, and warm earth-tone tiles. When I walked into my room, the first thing I noticed was that the mini-bar included fresh cocktail ingredients. A quick squeeze and a brisk stir, and I was relaxing in the hammock on our terrace in under 5 minutes, margarita in hand. 

Every room comes with a private terrace, and it is the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee and sunset cocktails. Because the property is so well insulated with plants, it never felt too hot being outside.

I tend to prefer a more modern bathroom design, and at first glance, I was afraid the overabundance of bright tile might make me feel claustrophobic. But it had the opposite effect, and instead, the bathroom was a cozy place to unwind with a bubble bath. These suites also come with indoor + outdoor showers. I find showering outdoors to be incredibly grounding and will opt for rooms with this option whenever I travel.

We were able to tour one of the largest suites on property, the ocean front one bedroom suite, complete with a private plunge pool + your very own spa palapa (See the steps leading up to it in the photo below?). The spa palapa functions exactly as the name suggests; you can enjoy oceantfront massages in the privacy of your own space and then walk less than 20 feet to float in your private pool.

spa + wellness // Arriving at the Kinan Spa to find our company name was a sweet surprise. Our role as travel advisors is all about relationships and it feels great to be appreciated by our travel industry partners.

sustainability // Belmond Maroma is working towards becoming the first plastic-free hotel in the Riviera Maya. The pandemic has slowed this effort at all hotels because single-use plastic products are aligned with the highest levels of sanitization. Belmond Maroma does have an alliance with Sky Ha water, packaged in 100% biodegradable 100% recyclable BPA Free bottles.

Belmond has made it their mission to be observant of a more sustainable food management approach. Belmond is the first global luxury hospitality brand to have undertaken an ongoing third party assessment of their food management by the UK-based Sustainable Restaurant Association. Kudos!

They’ve also made it a habit to use locally made products whenever possible. The hammocks found in every room at Belmond Maroma are handmade by a collective of over 400 women from three local Mayan communities in the Yucatan Peninsula: Tixkokob, Nolo, and Mayapan. Belmond Maroma supports another local community by purchasing all of the 100% sustainably produced, organic body products used on the property.
